Aug 27, 2005 · Great resource. I have an '86 JD 318. It is the "old style" Onan. I changed out the choke cable the other evening and after finishing, tried to start it. The choke works fine, but it acted like there was no spark. I bought a spark tester, the kind that allows you to hook it up to the plug wire and ground the other end.

I always recommend to put a wood dowel down the cylinder (remove both plugs) and turn it over by hand (either from under the tractor or with engine removed) and mark the rod at the spot where the cylinder is the highest. None of those readings are enough out of nominal to be concerned about... It looks like your jumper to 12 volts is done correctly -- so if the other terminal of the coil is getting switched up and down it should provide spark.Serial number of the tractor is C314L 19146LM. Took the points off and cleaned them. They were a little pitted so I filed them down to take the pitting out. Regapped them a little under .020".
